Urban life has always tended to produce a sentimentalist vision of nature. Nature is thought of as a garden, a placidly free territory, with birds singing an endless spring. When Hitchcock stages a mutiny of the birds in Birds (1963), he rescues the theme from its suprapolitical and bucolic aura to haunt us with the unusual complexity of our history, a history that is also very much interspecific.
Eles passarão, Tu passarinho is constructed as a historical reflection on the importance of birds in the human political landscape. It is an essay about subjugation, power relations and preservation, working from a cultural semiotics that is as expansive as possible, including both the everyday and the extraordinary.
This is not about talking about the bird family from a merely scientific angle, but about tracing a possible history, a kind of human museum of birds that does not humanise them, bending them to our image, but rather humanises ourselves through them and through a greater understanding of our very violent common history.
What do we know of the political understandings of birds, who served "Greeks and Trojans" in all wars, with the exception of the explicitly postulated by Churchill's macaw that screamed "Fuck the Nazis!", hmm?
